Once you move to the United States as a Latino, it is important to gel in with the people and culture to create a homely feeling. One of the best ways to do that is to play sports, so that you can interact and socialize with new people. Luckily, there are numerous sports that you can choose to play.
We’re all familiar with popular sports such as soccer, boxing, swimming, and wrestling but it is very unlikely that you would have heard about sports such as Padel Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, and Floorball.
Even though these sports are super fun to play, they are criminally underrated. That is because these sports aren’t very common, which is why a lot of people are unaware about them.
Not only that, but there aren’t any global events that cover these sports either. Today, I take it upon myself to tell you about some underrated sports that are super fun to play with your friends. Here are some of my favorites.
- Ultimate Frisbee
I’ll start this list off with Ultimate Frisbee, and it is exactly what it sounds like. The last time any of us played with a Frisbee was when we were kids. The last thing that you will imagine is a team of grown-ups running around, chasing a Frisbee as a team.
Though you would likely have heard of this sport before, the reason behind mentioning it here is that it is often overlooked. Think of it like flag football meets soccer and there you go you have Ultimate Frisbee. The game involves running after a Frisbee to catch it and score points.
- Joggling
Joggling is an unusual combination of jogging and juggling, where jogging demands more leg work while juggling uses your hands! It is the ultimate test of your body’s coordination with your mind.
All it takes for you is to have a focused mind and you are good to go. Once you practice enough, it’ll be easier for you to jog and juggle at the same time. You can also start healthy competitions with your friends to see who crosses the finish line first!
- Speed Golf
They say Golf is boring and for old people, right? That’s partly because the game is super slow and it takes a significant amount of patience to watch it, let alone play it. However, you should check out Speed Golf, which is a more amped-up and fun version of ordinary Golf.
Speed Golf was first introduced in the 1970s and even today, some people prefer it over regular Golf. In fact, this sport is even better from a fitness perspective too. The score is kept based on the number of strokes made by a player and the time taken to play 18 holes.
Considering how time is key in the game, players have to run after they make a shot and your next shot needs to be accurate too, making this game the ultimate test of endurance. Again, this is another underrated sport that requires practice before you perfect it!
- Chess Boxing
If you think playing Chess is boring, then you should try Chess Boxing which is different and a lot better than regular Chess. It is an interesting combination of both Chess and Boxing, which exercises your brain for the Chess match and your arms for the Boxing part.
There are two ways in which either of the opponents can win the game, you may either beat your opponent through a checkmate in Chess or you may win by knocking your opponent out by way of Boxing. At the end of the day, the strategy that you use depends on you.
- Pickleball
Pickleball is another sport that uses paddles, just like Padel Tennis. However, what makes it intriguing is that it combines elements of table tennis, tennis, and badminton. This interesting combination of three sports makes the entire process as exhilarating as possible.
If you are looking for a sport that is engaging to play with your friends, then you should give Pickleball a chance. Things tend to get competitive and once you start keeping score, the stakes get higher and the game gets even more engaging
- Wife Carrying
The next time you and your friends can’t figure out what to do the next time you meet, you guys can play “Wife Carrying” with each other (don’t forget to bring your spouse along of course). All you have to do is strap your wife to your back and participate in a race (and yes, this is an actual sport).
To take the stakes higher, you can place obstacles on the race track to make things difficult! Though there isn’t much to achieve from this sport, you can go home with the sense of satisfaction that you carried someone on your back and finished first in a race!
An Extra Sport to Tap into
If you’ve always been good at video games, then you’ll be happy to know that eSports is a thing too! You can add una emoción extra (an extra thrill) to your life once you tap into eSports. Some common eSports games include Tekken 7, DOTA 2, League of Legends and a lot more!
